Before or after mastectomy art photography – Velvet Thyme

Before or after mastectomy art photography

If you decide that a photo shoot, before or after, your mastectomy is right for you. I want to support you to document your body, your way.

Your body, photographed your way

This is a resource to help you better understand how I approach these photoshoots, so that you can decide if this is the right experience for you.

I offer a mix of alternative boudoir and art nude photography, where you decide how you would like to approach your photo shoot. What matters to me is that we collaborate to create photos that you love.

Before or after mastectomy photo shoots

A photo shoot is a positive way of documenting your body. Prior to mastectomy, it can be a cathartic way to record your breasts and process the upcoming changes. For post mastectomy photography, a photo shoot can be a way to bond with your body, and support you to accept physical changes.

You will know if photography is something that feels right for you and if you’re not sure, you’re always welcome to reach out and have a chat.

What shoot style works best - fine art nude or boudoir or...

The key difference between boudoir and fine art nude, is typically your level of clothing and the lighting. Although, these lines are very blurred – as fine art nude can be implied nude or have some clothing or covering. Boudoir is often be considered as a more ‘sexy’ photography style, but as I think what makes us all feel sexy is incredibly diverse, the photography I create reflects this. I mainly use these terms so that clients can find my services.

All you need to decide is the type of photos you prefer and what you would like, or not like, to wear. You may decide you want to feature a favourite dress or lingerie or choose art nude photography or a combination of both. Here’s a few examples of some photo styles below:

The Process: Before your shoot

Choose your shoot type & book your date

We work together to find you a shoot date – and I understand that you may have a limited time frame to book. I will try to get you in as fast as possible, as I typically keep a few days aside for last minute bookings. To learn about the different shoot types I offer, please read this page. Once we have decided on a date, I’ll send you though an invoice for just your shoot fee and a Questionnaire and Terms form to officially book you in.

Phone chat: What styles do you like?

Having your breasts/body photographed by a stranger can be intimidating and part of my process is to organise a phone chat with you before your shoot. This is a space where we can talk about how you would like to approach your photography experience. Together we will explore ideas, styles, colours etc. so that I can get a stronger sense of what might work best for you. You can also ask any questions that you may have. If you would like a phone chat before you book in – that’s totally fine too. Contact me and I will be in touch as soon as I can.

The day of your shoot

Drink & chat

After you’ve arrived, if it’s at the studio,  we’ll grab a drink and make a final plan for your shoot. This usually involves looking through what you’ve bought and chatting through ideas. This is an opportunity for us to get to know each other a little in person. If you have some music you would like to play, we’ll pop that on too and then I’ll let you get ready.

No time pressure

The main thing you need to know is that there is no time pressure. I only book a single shoot per day so that you can take the time you need. You might need to stop for a few cuppas, or need more time to process everything that’s going on. I understand this is an emotional journey and this is a safe space where you can take it at your pace. Equally, you might want to jump through the shoot like The Flash – whatever you need, I’ve got you.

As a rough guide, photography usually lasts around two hours, plus breaks, and we will typically be able to work through about 3-4 different setups/clothing changes. Ultimately, I want you to have a relaxed and positive photo experience, but not leave feeling like you’ve come back from the olympics!

Photo review

This is always a lot of fun! Straight after your shoot I put your unedited (RAW) photos up on the big screen, so that you can decide what you love. This is a step by step review process where I help you shortlist your favourites. There’s never any pressure – this is about choosing only what you love. We often go through photo sets a few times until you’ve whittled it down to the photos that make you feel AMAZING! We’ll laugh at some of the wonky ones and I know that you’ll find photos you love. Once you have your final favourites you can then decide which products you would like me to organise for you. The next day I’ll send off an invoice and once paid, I will begin your edits. You can also choose an interest free payment plan that is available for up to 3 months from your shoot.

After your shoot

Once I have edited your photos I will be in touch so that you can have a preview of the edits before I organise any products for you. If there are any further edits you would like, we do these now so that you are 100% happy with your photos. Once I have your A’OK, I will either begin your album design or organise your digital or print products. If we are creating an album you will also able able to review this design prior to print. This ensures you get exactly what you love. I then double, triply and quadruple wrap your beautiful products and send them to you via registered post. If you feel more comfortable picking them up from the studio that’s also totally fine, we can organise a time.
